A DataForSEO alternative under cross-examination: ten questions, answered straight
DataForSEO's own comparison page names its main limitation: a learning curve that “can be quite steep”. We took that candour as an invitation and put ten buyer's questions to both backlink APIs, covering the meter, the minimums, the limits and the index.
In our index dataforseo.com holds DR 44 on 1,759 referring domains and 25,716 backlinks, 85.2% of them dofollow, with crawl sightings running from 12 July 2024 to 9 September 2026. Nearly half of that total comes from two sites. cite.solutions (8,312 links, DR 15) and scowter.com (4,349 links, DR 4) both first appear in mid-July 2026 and together account for 12,661 links, or 49.2% of the profile. The rows we sampled do not point at a web page at all. They target api.dataforseo.com/cdn/i/…, files on the API's own CDN: at scowter.com they are image tags on job-listing pages, at cite.solutions they sit on report pages. We cannot say who runs either site or whether they are customers. What the crawl shows is third-party pages pulling files straight from DataForSEO's infrastructure, each one counted as a link.
Set those two aside and the picture is modest for a company that indexes well over a trillion links. The whole profile has no .gov or .edu referring domains, an average donor DR of 24, and seven of the top 100 referrers at DR 50 or above: google.com, wordpress.org, github.com, entrepreneur.com, pypi.org, n8n.io and seroundtable.com. In the same index serpapi.com has DR 46 on 2,304 referring domains, majestic.com DR 55 on 10,456 and ahrefs.com DR 67 on 83,108. This is a reading of our Common Crawl sample, not of the whole web, and it describes how the brand is linked, not how good its data is.

Question 1. Is DataForSEO a backlink API, or a dozen APIs behind one login?
Start with a document the vendor wrote itself. DataForSEO publishes a comparison page headed “Looking for a DataForSEO alternative? So were we.” In the table on that page, the row “Primary Limitation” carries this entry in DataForSEO's own column:
Learning curve can be quite steep
A vendor that writes down its own weak point has earned straight questions instead of a sales pitch. Here are ten, each answered from DataForSEO's published pages as read on 8 October 2026 and from our own index.
The about page gives the record: in-house software for a friend's SEO agency in 2011, a first API in 2016, version three in 2019, a Backlinks API beta across 2020–2021 and its full web release in 2022. Today the site's product menu lists a dozen API families: SERP, Keywords Data, Backlinks, On-Page, Labs, AI Optimization, Reviews, App Data, Business Data, Merchant, Domain Analytics and Content Analysis. In our screenshot of the homepage the word “backlinks” does not appear on the first screen; the green banner at the top promotes LLM brand monitoring.
So the answer is the second one: backlinks are one counter in DataForSEO's large shop. apibacklinks sells only that counter, through 19 actions about links and domain rating.
Question 2. What exactly does DataForSEO's meter count?
Two things at once: the request, and every row inside it. The Backlinks API pricing page states the rule in one sentence:
Your account will be billed for setting a task and retrieving its results, where one row is the object containing data on a single backlink, referring domain, page, etc.
The published figures are $0.024 per request and $0.000036 per row, with up to 1,000 rows per request, and DataForSEO shows its own sum: 0.024 + 0.000036 × 1000 = $0.06. Against that two-part meter apibacklinks counts only the call: one credit is $0.0001, a list call costs 2 credits, and the rows it returns are not billed. The same jobs on both meters, by our arithmetic:
| Job | DataForSEO | apibacklinks |
|---|---|---|
| One request, one row back | $0.024036 | $0 for domain or overview |
| One request, 100 rows (their default limit) | $0.0276 | $0.0002 |
| One request, 1,000 rows | $0.06 | $0.0002 |
| 1,000 requests of 1,000 rows | $60.00 | $0.20 |
On DataForSEO's formula the request fee is 40% of a full call and nearly all of a small one, so a thousand small questions cost about $24. DataForSEO also lists bulk endpoints that take up to 1,000 targets per request, which is the obvious route for that kind of job. The 300-fold gap on a full call is correct arithmetic, but it is not the same merchandise; Question 7 covers what each index holds. One caveat: the pricing page gives a single formula for the Backlinks API, and we did not confirm whether Summary or the bulk endpoints bill differently.
Question 3. Roundups still quote a $100 monthly minimum for DataForSEO backlinks. Is it real?
No: it was removed on 1 July 2026, the day DataForSEO published “Pricing Update in DataForSEO APIs”. One line of that notice reads “+20% for all endpoints” of the Backlinks API. Another cancels the $100 monthly commitment for Backlinks API access:
This means you no longer need to meet a monthly minimum payment requirement to use these APIs.
Three third-party roundups in our search results, dated 22 May, 15 June and 30 June 2026, still describe the $100 minimum; the last came out one day before the rule changed. What remains is a threshold. DataForSEO's FAQ puts it this way: “The minimum payment commitment is only $50.” The same FAQ says the balance has no expiry date. Fifty dollars at $0.06 buys about 833 full 1,000-row requests.
Question 4. Can I test DataForSEO on real data before paying anything?
Partly, and about one dollar's worth. The FAQ promises “the free trial $1 credit” and a free Sandbox, then qualifies the Sandbox:
Note that API responses in the sandbox are automatically generated samples and thus don't reflect the content of API requests.
So the Sandbox tests your parser, not DataForSEO's data. Whether the $1 can be spent on live Backlinks calls is not stated; if it can, it covers 16 full requests. Next to DataForSEO's trial dollar, our domain and overview actions answer without a key, and a first sign-in with Google adds $100 of credit with no card, which is 500,000 list calls at 2 credits each.
Question 5. What does one DataForSEO call look like on the wire, and one of yours?
A DataForSEO backlink request is a POST to an address such as https://api.dataforseo.com/v3/backlinks/summary/live, with a JSON array in the body and, per the docs, only one task per Live call. Authentication is HTTP Basic with an API login and a generated API password, and the auth page closes the obvious shortcut: “it is not possible to pass the login and password in URL parameters”. The reply is an envelope of status_code, status_message, time and cost, then tasks[], each task carrying its own status, cost and result[]. A meter reading inside every response is a detail we respect.
The published ceilings are 2,000 API calls per minute and 30 simultaneous requests. On the backlinks endpoint limit defaults to 100 and tops out at 1,000, while offset stops at 20,000, after which you carry on with a search_after_token.
An apibacklinks call, documented in the API reference, is a GET to one endpoint with an action and a domain, authenticated by ?key=sk_..., by a Bearer header, or by nothing for the free actions. Responses are JSON with CORS enabled, a call returns at most 1,000 rows, and deep pagination ends at 50,000 rows, a hard wall where DataForSEO hands you a token.
Question 6. Which DataForSEO endpoints have a twin here, and which have none?
We matched by function, not by name, and the mapping is ours, not DataForSEO's.
| DataForSEO endpoint | apibacklinks action |
|---|---|
| Summary | domain, overview (free, no key) |
| Backlinks | backlinks |
| Anchors | anchors |
| Referring Domains | refdomains |
| Domain Pages | toppages |
| Domain Intersection | intersect (2–10 targets) |
| Bulk Ranks (up to 1,000 targets) | bulk_dr (up to 2,000 domains) |
| History, Timeseries Summary, New & Lost Timeseries | none |
| Referring Networks, Competitors, Page Intersection, Bulk Spam Score | none |
DataForSEO's docs list thirteen named backlink endpoints, six bulk ones and an Index endpoint; link history, new-and-lost timeseries, referring networks, competitor discovery, page-level intersection and spam scoring have no counterpart among our 19 actions. In the other direction we did not try to match keyword (sites linked with an exact anchor phrase), search or compare to anything on DataForSEO's list, so read those as unmapped, not as missing there. Mind the caps: our refdomains returns the top 100 referring domains and anchors the top 50, where DataForSEO's backlinks endpoint pages on by offset and token.
Question 7. DataForSEO counts 1.85 trillion links, you count 798.6 billion. How wide is the gap, and how old is the data?
Wide, and it favours DataForSEO. Its Backlinks API page carried a live counter reading 1,848,939,666,969 live backlinks and 185,658,437,389 live pages. Counters elsewhere on the site showed 1.72 to 1.81 trillion, and the page text rounds to “roughly 2 trillion”. The crawl is DataForSEO's own, run by a bot it names DataForSeoBot, and the docs describe the cadence in one line:
We crawl the web each second nonstop, so the stats you get are always up to the moment.
The product page adds link history back to 2019. We have no independent measurement of how “up to the moment” holds in practice.
Set against DataForSEO's largest counter, our side of the ledger is 181,132,097 domains, 2,774,625,913 domain-to-domain links and about 798.6 billion page-level backlinks, built from 13 Common Crawl crawls spanning 2025 to mid-2026. Their figure is roughly 2.3 times ours, with the caution that the two totals come from each side's own counting and are not defined identically. Where DataForSeoBot crawls continuously, Common Crawl is a broad sample of the public web: we refresh as new releases are processed, roughly monthly, and a new link can take weeks to appear. If your product shows a client the backlink they earned yesterday, DataForSEO's live index is the right source and ours is not.
Question 8. Is DataForSEO Rank the same number as your DR?
No, and DataForSEO says so before we have to. Its help-center article on Rank, updated 25 June 2026, offers the metric to people who are used to Ahrefs and then draws the line:
Please note that DataForSEO Rank and Ahrefs DR are calculated using different methodologies, so their values should not be expected to match directly.
Rank runs from 0 to 1,000 by default, and a rank_scale parameter set to one_hundred brings it down to 0–100. The product page describes the scoring as one that “mirrors the Google's original PageRank algorithm”.
Our Domain Rating is a third thing again: 0–100, logarithmic, computed from referring-domain counts in our own graph. It is comparable in spirit to DataForSEO Rank and to Ahrefs DR, and equal to neither. Two fixed points show the offset: dataforseo.com sits at DR 44 in our index and ahrefs.com at DR 67 (the Ahrefs alternative page takes up that side). If you carry a threshold such as “only prospects above 30” over from a DataForSEO integration, recalibrate it on a sample. DataForSEO also returns a spam score, in the summary as backlinks_spam_score and as a bulk endpoint; apibacklinks has no toxic-link score for it to map to.
Question 9. Prove your index sees something: what does it say about dataforseo.com?
We ran three list actions against DataForSEO's own domain, and anyone can repeat them in the explorer.
toppages. The second most-linked URL is not a product page but https://dataforseo.com/?aff=143173, with 1,435 links, every one nofollow and every one from expirki.pl, a Polish domain-name blog that carries it across 1,263 pages. The affiliate programme linked in DataForSEO's footer can be read straight off the link graph. The most-linked content page is the free SERP Volatility Index at 593 links, and seroundtable.com alone points to it from 186 pages.
anchors. The people linking to the brand spell it four ways: “DataForSEO” 1,636 times, “Data For SEO” 481, “DataforSEO” 167, “Data for SEO” 132. Below the name come integration fingerprints: “Powered by DataForSEO” (263), “DataForSEO MCP Server logo” (244), “See the documentation” (104) and a raw https://app.dataforseo.com/api-access (68).
refdomains. wordpress.org sends 745 links, all nofollow; the rows we sampled are plugin listing pages citing DataForSEO's site, privacy policy and terms. pipedream.com, n8n.io, pypi.org and github.com all sit in the top 100. This is the profile of a company that other software is built on, and it took a handful of calls at 2 credits each to read it.
Question 10. Who should close this tab and stay with DataForSEO?
Stay with DataForSEO if any of these describes you, and that covers more buyers than comparison pages usually admit:
- You need links as they appear. A continuously crawled index and the New & Lost timeseries answer “what changed since yesterday”; a roughly monthly Common Crawl refresh does not.
- You need the past. DataForSEO's history back to 2019 has no equivalent in our API, which carries no historical charts.
- You need more than links. SERP, keyword, on-page, review and merchant data come out of the same DataForSEO balance. apibacklinks has no keyword research, rank tracking, traffic estimates or site audit.
- You need procurement answers. DataForSEO states a 99.95% uptime guarantee, 24/7 live chat for paid and trial accounts, ISO certification since 2021, and official SDKs for Python, PHP, C#, Java and TypeScript.
Next to DataForSEO, the case for apibacklinks is narrower and cheaper. If the job is a wide sweep, such as DR for a prospect list through bulk_dr at up to 2,000 domains per request, top referring domains and anchors for a few thousand competitors, or a keyless DR lookup inside a browser tool, the per-call meter and the $100 starting credit cover it, provided month-old data is acceptable. Nothing stops a team from running both: the cheap index to decide where to look, DataForSEO's live one to confirm what is there today. Providers other than DataForSEO are compared on the backlink APIs hub.
apibacklinks vs DataForSEO
| apibacklinks | DataForSEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Billing unit | Per call: 1 credit = $0.0001. Lookups 1 credit, list calls 2, search and keyword 3. Rows are not billed. | Per request and per row: $0.024 per request plus $0.000036 per row |
| One call returning 1,000 backlinks | $0.0002 (2 credits) | $0.06 (DataForSEO's own worked example) |
| Free access | domain, overview, stats, suggest free without a key; $100 credit on first Google sign-in, no card | $1 trial credit; free Sandbox that returns generated sample responses |
| Minimum spend | None. No subscription, no monthly minimum | $50 minimum payment; $100 monthly commitment removed on 1 July 2026; balance has no expiry |
| Authentication | ?key=sk_... or Authorization: Bearer header | HTTP Basic with API login and API password, header only |
| Request style | GET to one endpoint, 19 actions | POST with a JSON task array; one task per Live call |
